ON WATER, WAVES, AND ARCHITECTURE (2025) A poem in two chapters (ongoing) 15min loop.
(EXCERPTS FROM CHAPTER 1)
I think of this work as a visual poem, meditation, and reflection on the interaction of architecture and the sea. The project currently has 2 chapters, but I’m planning for a final work with 3-5 total chapters.
1) Research Labs build a dynamic and narrow slice of the sea indoors as they create waves to try to understand their complex flow (and beauty?)
I’ve been fascinated with wave flumes since I worked with one as a graduate student at the University of California, Los Angeles. The first chapter in this video was filmed in labs in Wisconsin and Oregon and looks at the research happening in the tanks, but also steps back to see the frame around this work: the amazing physical spaces and structures we build to try and better understand our natural world and how water moves and interacts with architecture. It makes me happy to know this research still needs to happen in the material realm and that not everything can be modeled digitally.
(Special thanks to the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s Fluid Mechanics in Environmental Processes Lab and at the Hinsdale Wave Research Lab at Oregon State University.)
