I cast the hands of people I know and asked them to pose as if they were holding water - replicating this daily gesture we all make when washing our face, drinking, or bathing. I took these fountain objects for field tests in northern Portugal, experimenting with rock anchoring, wave interaction, and color/site compositions. As the tide rises or rain falls, these temporary public sculptures serve as fountains. At other times, they wait for water. Taking inspiration from the complex gravity-fed fountains of Rome Italy, I’m interested in sculpture that takes part in the larger water cycle.

I’ve also placed these works in locations where they hold water draining from a gutter or as it flows through an urban stream. When installed in cities, these small sculptures become part of the concrete infrastructure, touching water as it flows over dams, through culverts, and off buildings.
