PIER was built in Joshua Tree, California, on a high desert ridge. 

Whenever I spend time here, I think about former seas and waterlines, and the slow creep of geologic time.

Like Tide Bed, Pier also exists within shifting water levels, and a back and forth switching of land and sea, but on a longer time-scale.  I was researching and thinking about Epicontinental Seas, and how the landscape we see today is just one point on an ever-changing continuum.   Back in the late Jurassic, this was waterfront property, and in the future it will have a sea view again. 

Pier is a geologic marker looking backwards and forwards at the same time.   “In memory of Ancient Seas, and for Those Waters Yet to Come”   It's a small monument to connect with deep time, and a great place to watch the sunset.
