HOUSE (Oct 2015 - Apr 2016) Ohio St. Beach, Chicago, IL. Presented by 6018North with the Chicago Park District for the Chicago Architecture Biennale.
I've moved a lot over the past couple decades, so my own view of home includes a sense of transportability and movement. With the House project, (in all 3 versions) I was also thinking about an expansion of one’s idea of home to include the outdoor environment, and in the case of the Chicago house, an expansion of home to include the city. But I wasn’t only interested in blending interior and exterior spaces in a physical sense. I was also thinking about the structure on a psychological level, with the house as a symbol of the self, and what it might mean to dissolve traditional barriers between one’s sense of self and the rest of the world. As Gaston Bachelard wrote in the Poetics of Space, “there is ground for taking the house as a tool for analysis of the human soul.”
